Jio Platforms’ initial public offering (IPO) swiftly surpassed expectations on Wednesday, with demand for shares exceeding twice the available supply within hours of the market opening. The $3.2 billion sale marks the first public offering by Reliance Industries’ telecom arm in two decades and has attracted significant attention from both institutional and retail investors.

The IPO was fully subscribed in under two hours, with institutional investors securing their quotas within just 10 minutes and the overall book filling up in approximately 100 minutes, according to sources familiar with the offering. This pace is unprecedented in India, where large IPOs typically experience slower subscription rates, often gathering momentum only in the final hours of the sale period. By comparison, recent major listings, such as the National Stock Exchange of India and Hyundai Motor India, were significantly undersubscribed on their first day, standing at 42 percent and 18 percent respectively.

Jio Platforms, home to India’s largest telecom operator, counts more than 500 million subscribers, making it the second-largest single-country telecom network globally after China Mobile. The company has received backing from prominent investors including Meta and Alphabet’s Google, as well as other institutional players. The telecom unit generates over 90 percent of Jio’s revenues, emphasizing its leading position in the Indian market.

Analysts highlight the company’s transformation of India’s telecom landscape as a key driver behind investor enthusiasm. Since its launch in 2016, under the leadership of Akash Ambani, Jio has disrupted traditional industry dynamics by offering affordable data services and free voice calls, rapidly gaining market share from competitors like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

The IPO values Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion, positioning it among India’s largest publicly traded companies upon trading commencement scheduled for October 28. This valuation approaches that of Bharti Airtel, whose market capitalization stood at $123.38 billion as of Wednesday.

Experts suggest the robust IPO performance also signals continued investor interest in telecommunications amid a global environment where scrutiny on technology and artificial intelligence ventures is intensifying. The strong fundamentals of Jio’s core business and reasonable valuation appear to have appealed to market participants seeking stable growth opportunities during a period of increased market volatility.
