Joanne Chang, founder of Flour Bakery, is set to host a community event celebrating cookies while supporting a charitable cause. Scheduled for Sunday, October 18, the gathering, titled "Cookies on the Common," will take place at Boston Common from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring a platter containing at least four dozen cookies to share, offering an opportunity for sampling a variety of homemade treats. The event will also feature games and live music.

This occasion marks a follow-up to a similar event last year commemorating Flour Bakery’s 25th anniversary, which attracted over 400 participants, including both professional bakers and home cooks. That initial gathering raised $25,000 for No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit organization addressing childhood hunger.

In addition to the social and charitable aspects, the event serves as a launch celebration for Chang’s new cookbook, “The Joy of Cookies: New Classics and Old Favorites to Share,” released the same week. The book includes recipes ranging from well-known bakery staples such as the chunky Lola cookie and homemade Oreos, to inventive confections like Mallomars, Peanut Butter Miso Caramel Cookies, and Sticky Bun Crisps.

Chang, whose own experience with cookie baking began with the classic Nestlé Toll House chocolate chip variety, emphasized the accessible nature of cookies, noting their simplicity and appeal. She expressed enthusiasm about seeing a wide array of creative contributions at the event, anticipating some participants will present elaborately decorated and inventive cookies.

Tickets for "Cookies on the Common" begin at $45.43 and can be purchased through Flour Bakery’s website. Proceeds will once again benefit No Kid Hungry, continuing the bakery founder’s commitment to combining community gatherings with philanthropic support.
