Joao Palhinha has addressed his decision to turn down a summer transfer to Aston Villa, opting instead to return to his native Portugal with Benfica. The 31-year-old Portugal international, who was in discussions to join Unai Emery’s side from Bayern Munich, revealed that the choice was a personal one, influenced by his family’s support.
“It was not an easy decision to return to my home country,” Palhinha said. “But at the end, it was my choice with the help of my family. I’m happy. Villa was an opportunity. Things didn’t happen and I’m in Portugal now. I am where I think I should be.”
Palhinha also expressed his respect for Emery, noting conversations they shared during the potential transfer period. “I spoke a bit with Unai and I feel that he’s a top coach and human being as well. But the things did not happen and I just have to wish them all the best.”
The midfielder joined Bayern Munich from Fulham in the summer of 2024 and made 25 appearances in competitive matches during his debut campaign, helping the German club secure the Bundesliga title. However, he spent the following season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur after struggling to establish a regular place at Bayern. Tottenham declined to exercise the £26 million option to make his transfer permanent.
Reflecting on his time in England, Palhinha praised the quality and atmosphere of the Premier League. “I enjoyed playing for Tottenham and Fulham. I miss the Premier League because it’s the league that leaves a mark on you compared to the other ones. The football and the passion people have for the game is unbelievable. I enjoyed it a lot.”
His return to Benfica marks a homecoming for Palhinha, who believes this move suits both his personal and professional circumstances following a period of transitions across major European leagues.
