EnergyAustralia has initiated a restructuring process involving the planned reduction of nearly 7 percent of its workforce in response to declining retail earnings and fluctuating wholesale electricity prices. The move comes as the company faces intensified competition and cashflow challenges amid a changing energy market.
The Hong Kong-owned firm has reportedly engaged global restructuring consultancy Alvarez & Marsal to conduct a comprehensive review of its operations. Approximately 150 positions are expected to be cut as part of the cost-saving measures.
Since 2022, EnergyAustralia’s customer base has decreased by 163,000 accounts, reflecting heightened competition and shifts in consumer behavior. In addition, the company experienced a significant drop in operating earnings before fair-value adjustments, which fell by 85.6 percent in the past year. This sharp decline has intensified the need to reduce expenses and improve overall financial performance.
Wholesale electricity prices in the market have been notably volatile, creating substantial cashflow pressures for retailers like EnergyAustralia. While these companies generally anticipate recovering higher costs over time, the immediate financial demands require securing large amounts of working capital, placing further strain on their operations.
EnergyAustralia’s actions highlight the broader challenges confronting energy retailers navigating a complex and rapidly evolving sector, where price instability and competitive pressures are reshaping industry dynamics.
