PUTRAJAYA — Graduates with disabilities who complete their studies at Youth and Sports Skills Training Institutes (ILKBS) have strong prospects for employment in both the public and private sectors, according to the Youth and Sports Minister, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari.
During the 21st ILKBS Convocation Ceremony held yesterday, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq highlighted the ministry’s efforts to track the career progress of ILKBS graduates, including those with disabilities such as autism. He noted that a significant number have successfully secured jobs and emphasized the ministry’s commitment to achieving the target of at least one percent representation of persons with disabilities in the public service sector.
At the ministry level, initiatives such as empowering disabled youths to operate services like cafes serve as examples of practical support. This year, a total of 4,155 graduates received certificates after completing diploma, advanced certificate, and skills certificate programs in various fields. Among the graduates were 130 youths with disabilities.
Dr. Mohammed Taufiq underscored the balanced curriculum at ILKBS, where 20 percent of learning focuses on character development and identity, and the remaining 80 percent emphasizes practical skills. As part of their training, graduates also engage in community programs to contribute back to society.
The minister welcomed the implementation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) 2.0, affirming the ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen youth and sports skill training centers through partnerships with industry players. Automotive and electrical sectors currently represent the highest demand for skilled graduates, though the ministry is also exploring rapidly growing industries to expand opportunities.
Graduates were encouraged to look beyond domestic job markets and consider employment opportunities in international regions such as ASEAN. Dr. Mohammed Taufiq stressed the importance of keeping up with advancements in artificial intelligence and digital technology, and urged students to not only seek employment but also to cultivate entrepreneurship skills. ILKBS currently boasts a graduate employability rate of 97 percent.
Among this year’s graduates, Muhammad Haffiz Rahim received the Overall Best Graduate Award. The 25-year-old diploma holder in Automotive Maintenance Engineering Technology from the National Youth Advanced Skills Institute Temerloh expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared aspirations to continue developing his skills and contribute to the public sector under the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). He also voiced support for the TVET pathway, citing its strong employment prospects and bright future.
Hailing from Bentong, Pahang, Muhammad Haffiz described his success as motivation to inspire others to pursue technical and vocational education as a viable career path.
