Joe Egan, the songwriter best known for co-writing the hit song "Stuck In The Middle With You," left behind an estate valued at £4 million following his death in 2024. Egan, who passed away at the age of 77 due to a stroke, was a founding member of the folk-rock band Stealers Wheel.

He collaborated with his school friend Gerry Rafferty on the 1973 single, which reached number eight on the charts. The song features the memorable lyric, "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right," and solidified its place in popular culture after being featured in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film soundtrack.

Egan, a multi-instrumentalist and lead vocalist on "Stuck In The Middle With You," earned royalties each time the track was played, sold, or streamed. His estate included approximately £1.5 million in royalties, which were bequeathed to his widow, Sylvia.

Throughout his career, Egan’s contributions to the music industry extended beyond this signature song, but it remains the work for which he is best remembered. The financial legacy he left reflects the enduring popularity of Stealers Wheel’s music decades after its initial release.
