Trainer Joe Ible has opted to run his promising galloper Barrengarry in the Listed Sydney Gold Cup rather than the $10 million Group 1 Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick on Saturday. The decision marks a strategic choice for the Kembla Grange-based trainer, who had initially considered entering Barrengarry in the Golden Eagle after the gelding drew the inside barrier for the exclusive four-year-old event.
Barrengarry, a son of Ghaiyyath, has shown strong form this preparation, winning his first two starts in Midway grade before finishing a close second to Anthracite—another Sydney Gold Cup contender—over 2000 meters at Rosehill Gardens. Ible indicated that his team had originally targeted four races for Barrengarry this season, with the Sydney Gold Cup being one of them. “When we accepted in the Golden Eagle, it was initially just to have a look,” Ible explained. “But after the barrier draw for the Gold Cup came out, we discussed and agreed with ownership that the Gold Cup was the right option.”
With Barrengarry set to race approximately 35 minutes after the Golden Eagle, Ible expressed confidence in the colt’s chances. Riding duties will be handled by Dylan Gibbons, and the horse is currently priced at $4.20 to claim the $750,000 prize. A top-three finish in the race would represent a significant milestone for Ible, who has so far competed mostly in provincial and mid-tier events. “To have a genuine contender in a race like this is a big moment,” Ible said, noting that previous high-profile entries had been long-shot outsiders.
In addition to racing considerations, Ible has linked Barrengarry’s Sydney Gold Cup run to a charitable cause. He announced that a $10,000 donation will be made to Street Side Medics if the horse finishes in the top three, highlighting his commitment to supporting the organization. “We are really happy to get behind and support Street Side Medics on Saturday,” he said.
The decision to bypass the Golden Eagle, despite its lucrative prize pool and Group 1 status, appears to combine both strategic racing goals and community engagement. Barrengarry’s owners and trainer have prioritized the Sydney Gold Cup as a key target, aiming for competitive success while contributing to charity through the horse’s performance. The race at Royal Randwick promises to be a significant test of Barrengarry’s development as he seeks a third consecutive win this season.
