Joe Root once again displayed resilience as England faced a challenging position heading into the final day of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. England resumed on Sunday at 182 for 5, still trailing by 281 runs in pursuit of what would be a world-record successful run chase in Test cricket. Despite the steep target, Root’s unbeaten 75 underscored his status as England’s leading batsman and the team’s hope of mounting a late resistance.
Root, 35, returned to the captaincy after Ben Stokes was sidelined following a one-Test ban linked to an off-field incident. Since taking over, Root’s composed and methodical approach has steadied the side, particularly after England’s early batting collapse left them reeling at 40 for 3. Root’s experience was crucial as he forged a 97-run partnership with Harry Brook, who contributed an innings of 50 before falling to Matt Henry’s bowling.
Fast bowler Josh Tongue acknowledged the gravity of the situation but maintained optimism given Root’s form and the remaining batsmen. “Of course it’s going to be tough,” Tongue said. “New Zealand are favourites, but with Joe in such good form, we’re definitely still in with a chance.” Root recently became only the second player in Test history to surpass 14,000 runs, moving closer to the all-time record held by Sachin Tendulkar.
New Zealand posted a first-innings total of 362 after adding 110 runs to their overnight score of 252 for 3. Henry Nicholls was the standout batsman with 121 runs. England’s bowling attack, led by Jofra Archer and Matt Fisher, responded aggressively. Archer claimed three wickets for 52 runs, including the crucial dismissal of Nicholls, while Fisher took three for 58, helping to dismiss the Black Caps quickly after lunch on Sunday.
Kyle Jamieson also proved a handful with the ball, taking three early wickets to destabilize the England top order. Early dismissals of Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, and Ben Duckett hampered England’s chase, leaving the middle order with a significant task.
James Rew’s dismissal late in the day dealt another blow to England’s hopes, and a missed catch from Root during Tom Blundell’s innings briefly added to the pressure. However, alert wicket-keeping from Rew prevented a costly error.
As the Test progresses, Root and Jordan Cox will look to extend the innings and give England a faint hope of avoiding a comprehensive defeat and keeping the series alive. The outcome on the final day will hinge on their ability to weather New Zealand’s potent bowling attack and overcome a daunting target.
