Hyron Andrews, a 31-year-old rugby player for the Johannesburg Lions, has died following a fall at his team’s hotel in La Rochelle. Andrews was in France ahead of the Lions’ Champions Cup match when the incident occurred, according to SA Rugby.
Andrews had recently returned to South Africa after spending two years with the Sale Sharks in England. He joined the Lions this summer, rejoining the South African rugby scene in his native country.
Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli described Andrews as “a cherished member of our Lions family” in a statement expressing condolences. The rugby community has mourned the loss of the player, whose career included stints both domestically and abroad.
