Carmine Agnello, the grandson of infamous Gambino crime boss John Gotti, began serving a 15-month federal prison sentence on August 10 for his involvement in a COVID-19 relief fraud scheme. Two days prior to surrendering, Agnello married Ariana Puran, who had previously accused him of assault.

Agnello was originally scheduled to report to prison on June 2 but received a two-month deferral after requesting time to donate a kidney to his mother, Victoria Gotti. However, the transplant surgery, which federal prosecutors argued could have been conducted within a prison medical facility, was never carried out.

In a separate legal matter, Agnello was charged in June with assault following allegations that he choked and slapped Puran at their East Norwich, Long Island residence during a dispute reportedly triggered by jealousy over a suspected affair. Puran later characterized the incident as a typical domestic disagreement, while Victoria Gotti criticized Puran for involving law enforcement, referring to her as “a rat.” That case remains pending in state court.

Agnello pleaded guilty in 2024 to wire fraud stemming from a scheme that defrauded over $1 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds. Prosecutors detailed how Agnello’s auto parts business received these funds and that approximately $420,000 was funneled into a failed cryptocurrency venture. He is currently incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in New Jersey, with a projected release date in August.

The 40-year-old Agnello previously gained public attention through his participation in the reality television series “Growing Up Gotti,” which chronicled the lives of the Gotti family.
