John Oliver, the host and writer of the late-night program "Last Week Tonight," is set to appear in a multi-episode storyline on the long-running ABC daytime soap opera "General Hospital." The 23-time Emmy winner announced that he will feature in episodes airing July 2, 3, and 6.
"General Hospital," which has been on air since 1963, welcomed Oliver's participation after the comedian publicly expressed his desire to join a soap opera cast. Frank Valentini, the show’s executive producer, stated that Oliver’s involvement was embraced without hesitation and described his forthcoming role as “an integral character in the story.”
Details about Oliver’s character have not been officially disclosed, but promotional images show him in a suit accompanied by individuals in tactical gear, suggesting he may portray a law enforcement figure. Valentini remarked on Oliver’s professionalism and positive demeanor on set and hinted at intriguing interactions with established characters in the series.
Oliver expressed enthusiasm about joining the soap, calling it a “dream come true” and “a true honor to be a small stain on the history” of the show. His interest in soap operas was publicly revealed earlier in the year during an episode of "Last Week Tonight," where he acknowledged his admiration for the genre and specifically referenced Stephen A. Smith’s recurring appearances on "General Hospital." At that time, Oliver invited soap operas to create roles for him, stipulating that he wanted a character with a dramatic, “ridiculous” name and sought involvement in classic soap opera storylines such as murder, slapping, or discovering long-lost family ties.
This upcoming appearance marks a unique crossover for Oliver, whose background is primarily rooted in satirical news and political commentary, and highlights his long-standing appreciation for soap operas. The episodes airing in early July will give viewers a chance to see Oliver in a new and unexpected context.
