JOHOR BARU, Malaysia — The Johor state government has pledged to cover all medical and rehabilitation costs for a two-year-old girl who remains in a coma after being attacked by a pack of five dogs in Batu Pahat.

Nur Haira Wafiqah Mohammad Hamizi was attacked around 7 a.m. on Saturday at her grandmother’s home in Kampung Tambak. The toddler was rushed to Hospital Sultanah Aminah, where she is currently receiving intensive care.

Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid, chairman of the Johor Islamic Affairs Committee, visited the child at the hospital and confirmed the state’s commitment to bear the full cost of her treatment through the Johor State Islamic Religious Council. He described the medical expenses as substantial and emphasized the importance of supporting the family during what will be a prolonged recovery process.

In addition to assisting with financial burdens, Mohd Fared urged the toddler’s parents and her 12-year-old brother to seek hospital counseling. The boy, who witnessed the attack, is reportedly traumatized and experiencing feelings of guilt for not being able to protect his sister.

Meanwhile, the Batu Pahat Municipal Council is actively engaged in efforts to capture and test the stray dogs involved in the incident for rabies.

The victim’s mother, Nur Wahyuni Harun, 36, said the family remains deeply affected by the event, which occurred on her birthday. Wahyuni, who was away selling fritters at a part-time job in Johor Baru at the time, said the experience has been especially difficult for her eldest son, who continues to relive the attack in his dreams.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the status of the dogs or any potential legal actions stemming from the attack. The local government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the issue of stray dogs to prevent similar incidents in the future.
