Johor aims to boost its white shrimp aquaculture output to between 38,000 and 40,000 tonnes next year, positioning the state as a key contributor to Malaysia’s seafood industry. Md Israk Abdullah, chairman of the state agriculture, agro-based industry, and rural development committee, highlighted the sector’s growth potential during a visit to a shrimp farming project in Kampung Sungai Danga.

Currently, Johor leads the nation in marine shrimp production, accounting for approximately 25.27% of Malaysia’s total output. Md Israk emphasized the importance of continued support and development of shrimp farming initiatives to sustain this growth.

The project visited is managed by the Johor Fishermen’s Association (Josfa) and spans 1.64 hectares. It features 11 tanks, including nine designated for shrimp rearing and two for water treatment, showcasing the application of modern aquaculture techniques. Md Israk observed the tank-based rearing system firsthand and engaged with operators to gather insights on operational progress and challenges faced.

The Josfa project, which commenced operations in September of the previous year, has so far produced 13.5 tonnes of white shrimp. These locally farmed products are distributed primarily throughout Johor Baru, contributing to a supply of fresh seafood for the region.

Md Israk underscored the potential benefits of such projects, noting their capacity to enhance rural livelihoods and stimulate the local economy. The emphasis on modern aquaculture methods reflects efforts to optimize production efficiency and sustainability within Johor’s growing aquaculture sector.
