New Zealanders are invited to participate in the 2026 New Zealand Herald Travel Readers’ Choice Awards, an annual survey designed to highlight top travel destinations and experiences both domestically and internationally. The initiative, supported by Southern Cross Travel Insurance, encourages Kiwis to share their favourite locations, travel tips, and bucket-list adventures through an online voting process.

Voting is currently open and will run until July 31, giving readers the opportunity to nominate their preferred destinations across multiple categories. These cover a broad spectrum of travel interests including best New Zealand holiday spot, best international holiday destination, best family holiday, best food and wine regions, best city within New Zealand and abroad, as well as best road trip and best-value destination. Winners of the readers’ poll will be announced on August 11.

In addition to contributing to a growing compilation of top-rated travel insights from New Zealanders, participants are entered into a prize draw to win an all-inclusive 12-day trip for two to Sri Lanka, valued at $10,000. The tour is offered by Inspiring Vacations and features a fully escorted travel itinerary that explores the diverse cultural and natural attractions of the island nation.

Highlights of the Sri Lanka prize package include return international airfare from Auckland, accommodation in carefully selected 3- and 4-star hotels, and daily breakfast. The itinerary encompasses visits to Colombo’s city streets, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort, and safaris in Yala and Minneriya National Parks to spot local wildlife such as leopards and elephants. Travelers will also journey through Sri Lanka’s famous tea country by train, experience traditional cultural performances in Kandy, and climb the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress. A Sri Lankan cooking demonstration and dinner are also part of the prize. All travel arrangements include private transport and an English-speaking guide throughout the tour.

The prize is valid for departures on February 6 or May 1, 2027, and aims to offer a comprehensive introduction to the island’s rich history, culture, and scenic beauty.

By participating in the awards, New Zealand residents have an opportunity not only to influence the recognition of favourite travel destinations but also to potentially embark on an immersive overseas trip. The voting process is accessible through the New Zealand Herald’s official website, where further details on categories and prize conditions are available.
