Lawyers representing Alan Jones have questioned the consistency of allegations made by a former high-profile athlete accusing the former radio host of indecent assault. The athlete, identified in court as Complainant M, claims Jones kissed him twice without consent: once at an awards dinner and again years later at Jones’s harbourside apartment.

Jones faces one count each of indecent assault and sexual touching related to the former sportsman. The charge of indecent assault relates to the awards dinner incident, during which M says Jones kissed him on the side of the mouth. The later allegation involves Jones allegedly rubbing his genitalia against M’s thigh while kissing him.

During cross-examination on Tuesday, Jones’s barrister, Gabrielle Bashir SC, highlighted discrepancies between M’s testimony and his 2024 police statement. M initially told police he was hugged before being kissed “inappropriately on my face close to the corner of my mouth,” but in court described the kiss as “close to my lips, not my cheek, the side of my lips.” M explained that he had indicated the precise location during his police interview, although the gesture was not recorded in the statement.

Ms. Bashir pressed M on whether Jones kissed him at the awards dinner, with M affirming the kiss occurred despite the defense’s repeated denials.

Testimony also revealed a complicated dynamic between the two men. M acknowledged that Jones had provided support, encouragement, and gifts over more than 20 years, including sending flowers and affectionate messages. M described Jones’s praise as “uncomfortable,” but also noted he had responded to texts with “love, hugs and kisses” and had prepared meals for Jones. Counsel for Jones argued the relationship was reciprocal, with Jones assisting M during personal crises and protecting his reputation in the public sphere.

M admitted the relationship was challenging due to Jones’s media influence and public profile, which he said contributed to maintaining polite contact despite the alleged incidents. He acknowledged having a “close relationship” with Jones that included a personal aspect, and said his awareness of Jones’s standing made navigating their interactions complex.

Ms. Bashir also referenced M’s prior knowledge of Jones’s alleged misconduct from media reports and an unauthorized biography before he first spoke with police.

The legal proceedings are ongoing as both sides continue to present evidence and arguments related to the alleged incidents and the nature of the relationship between the former radio host and the athlete.
