Jordan launched airstrikes against armed groups in Syria in response to a deadly shooting at a Greek Orthodox Church in Karak, a southern city in Jordan, officials said. The attack, which occurred on Friday, resulted in the deaths of nine people and injured more than two dozen others.
The Jordanian air force confirmed the airstrikes targeted terror groups, causing numerous casualties among their ranks, though it did not disclose the specific locations or identities of the groups involved. Syrian state media reported that the strikes took place in the Daraa province and cited local health officials stating at least five civilians were killed during the operation.
Following the church shooting, Jordanian security forces conducted a raid early Monday, arresting three suspects believed to be involved in the attack. The men were injured during the arrest after a shootout with authorities, according to Jordanian officials. Investigations into the attackers’ motivations remain ongoing, as no organization has claimed responsibility for the incident.
The attack in Karak, which targeted worshippers at the Greek Orthodox Church, deeply shocked the Jordanian public. In response, the government declared three days of mourning to honor the victims. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to pursuing those responsible and continuing counterterrorism efforts to safeguard national security.
