Jordan Henderson has expressed strong support for Jude Bellingham’s role in England’s squad ahead of their World Cup match against Croatia. Speaking at a press conference near Kansas City, Henderson highlighted the Real Madrid midfielder’s influence both on and off the pitch, describing him as a key figure within the team.
Bellingham, 22, who has faced challenges this season due to injury, is expected to start against Croatia if head coach Thomas Tuchel opts for him over Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers. Both Bellingham and Rogers have spoken highly of Henderson this week, with Bellingham calling him “the first name on the team sheet.” Henderson reciprocated the praise by emphasizing Bellingham’s leadership and maturity at a young age.
Recalling the midfielder’s growth over the past six years, Henderson said he is continually impressed by Bellingham’s development as both a player and person. He noted the midfielder’s eagerness to participate in training drills, despite being among the youngest players in the group, underscoring his commitment and team spirit.
“I could not speak highly enough of him,” Henderson said. “A lot gets written about him in the media and I really find it hard to read sometimes. I just know how big an influence he is on this team, how good a teammate he is off the field. What he gives us is something really special. He gives us the X-factor in our team.”
The upcoming match will mark Bellingham’s 49th international appearance if he features, and the decision to start him over Rogers falls to Tuchel. Rogers had an impressive showing during the qualifying campaign and is considered a strong contender for a starting spot against a Croatian side led by veteran midfielder Luka Modric.
Henderson further praised Bellingham’s temperament in high-pressure situations, calling him a “big-game player” who earns respect from his teammates for his training ethic and attitude. “Ask any player in the group, they’ll tell you how much of a good teammate he is and how well he trains. We all know what he can do and how much we all love him,” Henderson added.
