A jersey worn by Michael Jordan during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for a record $14 million, marking the highest price ever paid for basketball memorabilia. The autographed Chicago Bulls jersey was purchased in a private sale by Miami real estate investor Ron Firman, Hunt Auctions announced on October 12.

The jersey’s sale ranks as the second-largest amount ever paid for a game-worn sports jersey, trailing only the $24.12 million paid in 2024 for the New York Yankees jersey worn by Babe Ruth in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series. That game is famous for Ruth’s “called shot” home run.

The 1998 NBA Finals marked the culmination of Jordan’s career with the Bulls, as they defeated the Utah Jazz in six games to secure their sixth championship title. The jersey dates to Game 2, played on June 5, 1998, in Salt Lake City, where Jordan helped Chicago even the series with a standout performance of 37 points, five rebounds, and three assists in a 93-88 victory. Nine days later, Jordan earned his sixth and final Finals MVP award, setting a record with two more than any other NBA player.

The sale follows closely on the heels of a $12.26 million auction in September for another Jordan jersey worn during Game 3 of the same Finals series. Both sales reflect growing interest in Jordan-related memorabilia, fueled in part by the lasting impact of the 2020 documentary “The Last Dance,” which chronicled the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls season.

David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, described the sale as a testament to Jordan’s significance in sports and popular culture. He noted that the jersey is more than a collectible; it has become an elite asset comparable to iconic works of art, underscoring Jordan’s enduring influence. Hunt expressed satisfaction in facilitating what he called a “historic sale” that sets a new benchmark for the sports memorabilia market.
