Former physical education teacher Jim Welch has praised England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s abilities not only as a shot-stopper but also as a potential penalty taker. Welch, 71, who taught Pickford at St Robert of Westminster RC School in Washington, Tyne and Wear, recalled that the England No. 1 played in midfield during his school years and possessed a notably powerful left-footed shot.

“I think he would be really good at penalties. And I don’t just mean saving them – he can take them as well,” Welch said. He added that Pickford frequently scored goals from long range and was known for his impressive passing skills. “If he took a penalty, he would be good and I’d be confident about him scoring,” Welch remarked.

Having retired a decade ago, Welch noted that Pickford’s willingness and skill could see him confidently step forward during penalty shootouts at major tournaments. “I would not put it past him to step up and take one – he would score nine times out of 10 in my view,” he said. Welch also acknowledged Pickford’s proven track record in saving penalties for England, suggesting that his contributions could extend to scoring as well.

When asked if he plans to watch England’s matches in the upcoming World Cup, Welch replied, “I will if my wife lets me,” indicating his ongoing interest in his former pupil’s career.
