Jordanian security forces have arrested three men in connection with an armed attack on a Greek Orthodox church that left nine people dead and more than 25 wounded. The incident occurred last Friday during a funeral procession at St George’s Church in the village of Hammoud, located in the Karak governorate approximately 55 miles south of Amman.
Authorities said the suspects were apprehended following a joint security operation involving specialized investigation and raid teams. The three men were wounded during a confrontation with security personnel at dawn on Monday. The Public Security Directorate identified the suspects as brothers Hazzah Zaidan Mohammad and Mishal Zaidan Mohammad, along with their brother-in-law Ahmad Sami Hussein. All three are Jordanian nationals.
The attack was described by Jordanian officials as a terrorist act. Gunmen reportedly stormed the church compound and opened fire on attendees during the funeral, causing multiple casualties. State media outlets reported the arrests and the security response but provided limited information on the motives behind the assault or any affiliations the suspects might have.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation across Jordan and elicited condolences from various religious and political leaders. Security forces continue to investigate the attack, aiming to clarify the circumstances leading to the violence and to uncover any broader networks or support structures related to the suspects.
Jordan’s officials have emphasized their commitment to maintaining security and protecting places of worship amid rising concerns over potential sectarian tensions and acts of violence in the region.
