Josh Fowler has credited St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari for his support during a period of goal-scoring difficulties. The 24-year-old forward opened his account for the club in their 4-3 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday, marking only his third goal in 18 appearances since joining from Queen’s Park in January.

Fowler’s selection in the starting lineup for the opening day match was a significant vote of confidence from Valakari, who stood by the striker despite a goalless run in the earlier Premier Sports Cup fixtures. St Johnstone had been eliminated from the tournament in the initial rounds after Fowler failed to score in four games.

Reflecting on the manager’s backing, Fowler emphasized the importance of having a coach who believes in a player’s abilities. “The main thing is the gaffer loves me – and backs me 100 percent,” he said, noting that Valakari had communicated his trust and intentions clearly from the outset. “He told me I’d be starting when the Premiership came around and he was true to his word.”

Fowler, who played almost the entire match against Kilmarnock, added that scoring and providing an assist in the game were rewarding outcomes after a challenging spell. “Hopefully a goal and assist have paid him back,” he remarked. “The most important thing for a player, not just a striker, is having a manager who believes in you. I’m absolutely buzzing to score. When you’re not doing that, even if you’re playing well, people start thinking things. To get off the mark straight away is great.”

His contribution helped secure St Johnstone’s first opening day Premiership win since 2017, offering a positive start to the new campaign for the Perth-based side.
