Trái Hume celebrated a milestone moment following Sunderland’s recent European victory over AZ Alkmaar. The 24-year-old midfielder has experienced a rapid progression since joining the Black Cats from Linfield in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

Hume’s early days at Sunderland saw limited action, with just three appearances in his first season as the club secured promotion from League One to the Championship via the play-offs. Since then, he has established himself as a regular starter during Sunderland’s Championship campaigns and signed a new contract in the summer of 2025 amid the club’s push back into the Premier League, achieved through another play-off final triumph.

Now competing at the European level, Hume reflected on the unexpected nature of his journey and the significance of the moment. “It means everything, the journey that we have been on over the last couple of years has led to this moment,” he said. “These fans deserve this moment. It’s a bit crazy to be honest. If you had asked me five years ago that I would be here, I would have said no. Now that we are here, I’m just trying to enjoy every moment.”

Hume credited the strength of the team, coaching staff, and supporters for Sunderland’s achievements so far. “We have a great team, great staff and unbelievable fans. We fully deserve this moment. We are going to keep pushing this season,” he added.

Despite his overall positive contribution, Hume acknowledged missed opportunities in the match against AZ Alkmaar. “I probably should have scored to be fair. Some of them were a bit difficult. I think the one in the second half I should have definitely put away. Thankfully, Enzo Le Fee stepped up, spared my blushes and made us get three points,” he remarked, highlighting the decisive goal from his teammate.

Sunderland’s European campaign marks a significant chapter for the club and for Hume personally, reflecting a swift rise through the tiers of English football and onto an increasingly competitive stage.
