The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal has expelled Mohammad Ismail Hossain, vice-president of its Chattogram North District unit, following allegations that he assaulted a police constable at Sitakunda Police Station on Thursday night.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when an argument reportedly broke out between Ismail and constable Mohammad Shafik, who serves as the driver to the officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station. According to police officials, the dispute began after Shafik asked Ismail not to park his vehicle at the station gate. The exchange escalated, and Ismail allegedly struck the constable. Following the confrontation, police detained Ismail.
Shafik was subsequently admitted to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.
In response to the detention, approximately 50 leaders and activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jubo Dal gathered at the police station later that night demanding Ismail’s release. The group characterized the incident as a minor disagreement and a misunderstanding rather than a deliberate assault.
Sitakunda Police Station OC Mobinul Islam confirmed that the altercation began when Shafik requested Ismail refrain from parking at the police station gate, after which the assault occurred.
The Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal issued a statement on Friday announcing Ismail’s expulsion from the party and revoking his primary membership. The party cited “clear allegations” of obstructing law enforcement personnel during their official duties as the grounds for the decision.
The case highlights tensions between political activists and law enforcement officials in the region, with the party’s swift disciplinary action indicating an effort to distance itself from the altercation. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
