Craig Revel Horwood, a judge on the long-running television dance competition Strictly Come Dancing, recently paid tribute to the late Len Goodman, the show’s original head judge who passed away in 2023 at the age of 78. Speaking at the unveiling of a sculpture honoring Goodman at the Goodman Dance School in Dartford, Kent, Revel Horwood reflected on Goodman’s impact on the series and offered a lighthearted jab at current head judge Shirley Ballas.

Describing Goodman as “Strictly” personified, Revel Horwood praised his quick wit and memorable catchphrases, noting that Ballas had unsuccessfully attempted to replicate Goodman’s iconic phrase “A 10 from Len.” The remark drew laughter from the gathered audience. The 61-year-old judge also called the new sculpture “absolutely phenomenal” and expressed a hope for a similar tribute when his own time comes.

Revel Horwood recalled his early years on Strictly, which he joined in 2004, admitting that he initially struggled with ballroom and Latin dance styles. Goodman, who had been head judge since the show’s inception in 2004, assisted him during that time, often vocally correcting him from the judges’ platform as Revel Horwood learned the ropes. He described their on-screen interactions as competitive but emphasized the friendship that continued offstage.

“Len created Strictly,” Revel Horwood said, highlighting Goodman’s role in establishing the show’s lasting success. He added that Goodman combined expertise with humor, quoting several of the late judge’s catchphrases, including “Pickle my walnuts” and humorous critiques such as describing a samba performance by television presenter Susanna Reid as “all bounce, bum and bongos.”

Goodman stepped down as head judge in 2016 after 12 years, citing his age, with Ballas succeeding him in the role. Strictly’s current presenting team consists of Emma Willis, comedian Josh Widdecombe, and professional dancer Johannes Radebe. Revel Horwood expressed admiration for each, praising Willis’s presenting skills, anticipating spirited exchanges with Widdecombe, and commending Radebe’s empathy and experience.

Despite his long tenure, Revel Horwood indicated no intention to leave the show soon, joking that producers would have to “drag me by whatever hair I have left, kicking and screaming.” He described his role on Strictly as “the best Saturday job ever,” underscoring his ongoing commitment to the series that continues to attract large audiences in the United Kingdom.
