Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as head coach of the Germany national football team following the country's early exit from the 2026 World Cup. The decision comes after Germany's unexpected elimination, despite topping their group in the tournament.

Nagelsmann, who guided Germany to a strong start with a 7-1 victory over Curacao and a 2-1 win against Ivory Coast, cited the need for a fresh start for the team as a key factor in his resignation. He acknowledged the disappointment of the campaign, especially after a setback against Ecuador and a subsequent failure to recover against Paraguay in the knockout stage.

In a statement, Nagelsmann expressed gratitude toward his coaching staff, the players, and the German Football Association (DFB). He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support during the tournament, noting that the team had let them down by not delivering more matches.

DFB sporting director Rudi Voller praised Nagelsmann’s decision and professionalism. Voller described Nagelsmann as an excellent coach who had taken full responsibility and placed the interests of the national team above personal considerations. He indicated that Nagelsmann is expected to continue his successful career beyond the national team role.

Germany’s World Cup campaign began with considerable promise, but difficulties emerged after their group stage loss to Ecuador. Although they finished first in their group, the results left lingering doubts that were confirmed in the knockout round defeat against Paraguay. This outcome has prompted a reassessment within the DFB and now a search for new leadership with the aim of revitalizing the squad ahead of future international competitions.
