A controversy over a canceled July 4 fireworks display in Long Beach, California, has prompted legislative action and political debate as the nation prepares to mark its 250th Independence Day. Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) introduced the Fireworks for Freedom Act on Thursday, seeking to guarantee that Americans can enjoy traditional fireworks shows for the holiday.

The legislation follows the California Coastal Commission’s decision to deny a permit for Long Beach’s annual “Big Bang on the Bay” fireworks event, citing concerns about potential pollution of the bay and disruption to nearby herons and egrets nesting in the area. The Commission instead approved alternative celebrations such as drone light shows.

Calvert sharply criticized the agency’s ruling, describing it as an attack on American liberties and framing the ban as part of a broader effort to restrict traditional Fourth of July celebrations in the state. He emphasized that the holiday should include customary festivities like fireworks, hot dogs, and apple pie.

Support for the Fireworks for Freedom Act has come from fireworks industry groups, including the American Pyrotechnics Association, which argue that the measure would remove unnecessary regulatory barriers while maintaining safety standards. The cancellation of the Long Beach display marks the first time in 15 years that the event will not feature a fireworks show.

The Coastal Commission, responsible for safeguarding California’s coastline and natural habitats, defended its decision as an effort to protect sensitive wildlife and the marine environment. Officials permitted drone shows and other non-fireworks alternatives to balance public celebration with environmental concerns.

The incident has drawn attention from California Democrats, including Governor Gavin Newsom. His office stated it is reviewing the situation “on behalf of the people of Long Beach” but had not released further updates as of the time of reporting.
