Leong Jun Hao, Malaysia’s top-ranked men’s singles badminton player, is set to compete in the individual event at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium with an opportunity to avenge his previous defeat to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan. The 26-year-old received a first-round bye and is expected to face Batdavaa Munkhbat of Mongolia in the second round before likely meeting Alwi in the third round.
Jun Hao’s anticipated contest with Alwi carries added significance, as the Malaysian player fell to the Indonesian in the final of the 2025 Southeast Asian Games singles event held in Thailand. However, Jun Hao already achieved a measure of redemption during the recent team quarterfinals, where he secured a win over world No. 1 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, marking his first victory against Christie this year after three previous losses. Despite this, Malaysia narrowly lost the tie 2-3, with teammate Aaron Chia and Tee Kai Wun contributing a doubles win.
Alwi, known for his crucial win over Li Shifeng that helped Indonesia defeat China 3-2 in the men’s team final, is scheduled to play hometown favorite Kenta Nishimoto in his second-round match.
Should Jun Hao progress past Alwi, his path will become increasingly challenging. He would compete in the lower half of the draw alongside second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, as well as other leading players such as seventh-seed Li Shifeng of China and third-seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan. Indian player Ayush Shetty is also part of this competitive section.
On the opposite side of the draw, Malaysian shuttler Justin Hoh advanced to the second round after his first-round opponent, Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul, withdrew. The upper half of the draw features top seed Jonatan Christie, China’s Shi Yuqi (fourth seed), India’s Lakshya Sen (eighth seed), and Japan’s Kodai Naraoka (fifth seed), setting the stage for a highly competitive tournament.
The event is seen as a critical opportunity for Jun Hao and his compatriots to establish themselves against a strong field of international contenders following mixed results in recent team competition.
