Aloys Junior, a rising talent in the cruiserweight boxing division, attributes his initial interest in fighting to an unusual source: a video game featuring early 2000s hip-hop artists. The 23-year-old fighter from South East London first encountered the concept of street fighting through the game Def Jam: Fight for New York, which combined the city's music scene with martial arts-style combat.

Junior recalled how the game captured his imagination, particularly an overhand right hook move that intrigued him enough to try it in real life during his primary school years. “I was in primary school at the time and I threw an overhand right hook at a kid. What happened was I got into trouble,” he said. The game, set in urban environments similar to his own neighborhood, blended music and fighting in a way that resonated with him. Playing as figures such as Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube, Junior appreciated the game’s creative mix of street fighting and martial arts, supported by a soundtrack that further connected the experience to his interests.

Beyond the virtual world, Junior faced challenges growing up, including bullying due to his smaller stature. He initially pursued karate but found it unsatisfactory because the training lacked full contact sparring. After unsuccessful attempts to defend himself using karate moves, he turned to online videos of knockouts for inspiration. Mike Tyson, known for his knockout power, became Junior’s boxing idol. “I saw the way he was able to knock people out and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness. If I have this power and if I have this ability, nobody can bully me again’,” Junior explained.

Following this realization, Junior convinced his father to enroll him in boxing training. His skills progressed rapidly, and he began to assert himself physically, eventually halting the bullying he had experienced. Currently making his mark with a string of early knockouts, Junior is scheduled to return to the ring later this month on the undercard of heavyweight Moses Itauma’s world title fight.
