Ricky Wilson, lead singer of the British band Kaiser Chiefs, has spoken openly about his decision to embrace sobriety after years of battling anxiety and the pressures of fame. Now 48, Wilson says giving up alcohol has helped him manage his anxiety, allowing him to channel his energy more positively, particularly during performances.

Wilson rose to prominence more than two decades ago with Kaiser Chiefs’ indie hits such as "I Predict A Riot" and "Oh My God." The band was often associated with the rock star stereotype of heavy partying, a lifestyle Wilson has described as increasingly difficult to control. He has explained that alcohol initially served as a coping mechanism for his anxiety but eventually became problematic. At one point, the band even removed all alcoholic drinks from their rider to support his recovery.

Describing himself as an introvert, Wilson recalls feeling overwhelmed by sudden fame and the attention it brought. He has said that during a brief period of heightened celebrity, he retreated into himself in response to false reports and intense media scrutiny. “For about 15 minutes we were pretty famous, and in that time, I withdrew into myself totally,” he reflected, noting that much of the coverage was untrue and unsettling. Wilson also shared that beyond the partying, the experience of fame felt “out of control” and daunting.

Since overhauling his lifestyle about a decade ago, Wilson has adopted healthier habits, including regular running and a better diet. He credits these changes with increasing his enjoyment of live performances and enhancing his energy levels. “These days, I enjoy performing more than I ever did,” he said.

Wilson also recounted the less glamorous aspects of his earlier career, including enduring tours while hungover. He said he often wasted travel time trying to recover from nights of heavy drinking, something he no longer experiences.

In addition to his music career, Wilson served as a judge on the television talent competition The Voice UK from 2014 to 2016. He has described his time on the show as both rewarding and stressful, admitting he may have taken the role too seriously. Despite some differing opinions between himself and his wife, celebrity stylist Grace Zito, who shares twin daughters with him, he expressed interest in pursuing more television opportunities.

Most recently, Wilson partnered with Tempcover to launch Scenic Route Finder, a free interactive tool designed to help drivers discover alternative scenic routes.
