A painting by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, looted by the Nazis during World War II, sold at auction for more than £31.5 million (approximately $42 million) in London on Wednesday. The work, titled "The Colorful Life" and created in 1907, had been held by a German museum for nearly 50 years before being restituted to the heirs of its original owners in 2023.
The piece was part of the collection of Emanuel Lewenstein, a Dutch Jewish industrialist and sewing machine factory owner, and his wife, Hedwig Lewenstein Weyermann. The couple's art collection was sold at an auction in Amsterdam in October 1940, shortly after Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands. Both Lewensteins had died by then, and their surviving children had fled Europe. The precise circumstances of the 1940 sale remain unclear, though historians and experts suggest it occurred under coercion linked to Nazi persecution.
In 1972, the German bank Bayern LB acquired the painting and subsequently loaned it to a Munich museum, where it remained on display for decades. The Lewensteins’ descendants initiated legal action in 2023 to reclaim the artwork. Following a recommendation from the German government’s advisory commission on Nazi-looted art, Bayern LB returned the painting to the family. The commission stated that losses of art by persecuted individuals in Nazi-occupied Netherlands should generally be considered involuntary unless there is concrete evidence otherwise, highlighting indications that the Lewensteins' 1940 sale resulted from Nazi persecution.
"The Colorful Life" is regarded as a significant work in Kandinsky’s transition from figurative painting to abstraction. The painting depicts a vibrant, dreamlike landscape populated by brightly clad figures. Christie’s, the auction house responsible for Wednesday’s sale, described the piece as a panoramic scene pulsating with life and estimated its value between $24 million and $33 million. Bidding for the work lasted approximately six minutes, ending with a price above expectations. The buyer’s identity has not been disclosed.
While the sale set a substantial price, it did not surpass the record for a Kandinsky painting, which was established in 2023 when one of his works sold for about $45 million at a Sotheby’s auction.
