Trainer Karl Burke has indicated that his colt Zeus Olympios could face off against Bow Echo in the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville later this month. Zeus Olympios, who recently claimed victory in the Summer Mile at Ascot, is aiming to secure his first Group 1 triumph at the French meeting scheduled for Sunday, August 16.

Bow Echo, the winner of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, has emerged as a possible participant, potentially setting up a clash with Zeus Olympios. Both horses are owned by the executors of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid. Burke expressed openness to the prospect of a direct competition between the two, noting that Zeus Olympios appears to be in excellent form following recent training sessions.

“I’ve had a chat with Liam O’Rourke [the owners’ bloodstock adviser] and there is every chance Zeus Olympios goes for it,” Burke said. “Whether Bow Echo goes or not, I’m keen to go as he seems in great form and he worked well yesterday. Bow Echo has won his Group 1s and has stamped himself as a stallion, and this is an opportunity for Zeus Olympios to win his Group 1. If both horses turn up it could be an interesting race.”

In other news, five-time Group 1 winner Fallen Angel is expected to make her seasonal return in the Listed Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock Park on Saturday. Burke said the decision to run the mare will depend on ground conditions, emphasizing the importance of “genuine good ground” for her to perform safely.

“She has been crying out to run, but we made the decision not to run her on fast ground,” he added.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Cup winner Venetian Sun has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a tendon injury. Burke revealed that the injury may have originated during her performance when finishing second in the July Cup at Newmarket. However, a cut sustained at that race, which required antibiotic treatment, might have initially obscured the extent of the tendon damage.

“We have a feeling she may have initiated it at Newmarket, but she came back from there with a nasty little cut and had been on antibiotics that we think may have masked it to a degree,” Burke explained. Discussions about Venetian Sun’s future racing plans, including whether she will remain in training next year, are expected to take place at a later date.
