The Katara Cultural Village in Doha inaugurated the "Qabasat" exhibition on Monday, featuring works by Syrian artist Dr. Wassim al-Hamdou. The event was attended by Katara Director-General Dr. Khalid Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, Charge d’Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Qatar Dr. Bilal Turkia, alongside ministers, diplomatic representatives, and members of the cultural and artistic communities.

Scheduled to run through June 29, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to engage with a collection of artworks inspired by Arabic calligraphy and elements of Arab and Islamic culture. The display combines traditional motifs with contemporary artistic expression, aiming to merge authenticity with innovation.

Speaking at the opening, Dr. Bilal Turkia emphasized the importance of the exhibition in highlighting values such as beauty, knowledge, and identity intrinsic to Arab and Islamic culture. He praised Dr. al-Hamdou for his successful integration of classical Arabic calligraphy with modern art forms, noting that the exhibition reflects cultural and humanistic themes through novel techniques. Turkia also underscored the show’s significance as a platform representing Syrian art within Qatar, particularly during a critical period in Syria’s history. He highlighted the event as a symbol of the close and evolving cultural relations between Qatar and Syria, contributing to stronger people-to-people ties.

Dr. Wassim al-Hamdou described the exhibition as a significant development in his series of shows across the Arab world. He acknowledged Katara Cultural Village as a leading cultural hub known for fostering innovation and promoting intercultural dialogue. Al-Hamdou explained that his artwork stems from a deep passion for Arabic calligraphy, which he expresses through a distinctive personal style.

Most of the pieces on display were created using ink-based techniques, enhanced by mixed media and varied materials. Some works incorporated acrylic paint as an experimental element to add texture and visual complexity, offering visitors a layered artistic experience that bridges traditional calligraphy with contemporary art practice.
