Comedian Katherine Ryan has expressed that her role as a mother restricts her from participating in reality television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. The 42-year-old, who has four children—Violet, 17, Fred, four, Fenna, two, and Holland, 17 months old—with partner Bobby Kootstra, shared her perspective in an interview with Principle magazine.

Ryan revealed that while she has not received formal offers to join either show, there have been inquiries made. However, she views participation as impractical due to the demands of being away from her children for extended periods and the intense workload involved. “You just don’t see your family,” she said, highlighting the challenges of balancing career opportunities with parental responsibilities.

The comedian also reflected on the gender dynamics surrounding parenthood and public perception, noting a frustration with societal expectations. “There are things I feel prohibited from doing as a mum and it is difficult to contain the feminist rage I have sometimes,” Ryan commented. She contrasted her experience with that of fathers, suggesting men often have more freedom to engage in such ventures without facing similar criticism or constraints. “Dads can just go anywhere and do anything and there’s a wife at home keeping it together,” she observed.

Ryan’s remarks underscore ongoing conversations about the intersection of parenthood and professional commitments, particularly for women in the entertainment industry.
