Kelly Brilliant, co-executive director of The Fenway Alliance, a consortium of over 20 cultural institutions in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood, is preparing for the nonprofit’s 25th annual Opening Our Doors Day festival scheduled for October 12. The festival, which offers free access to a wide range of cultural experiences, has become a hallmark event promoting community engagement with Boston’s arts and culture.

Brilliant, a Brookline resident originally from Beacon, New York, emphasized the alliance’s broader mission to address community needs including public safety, environmental advocacy, and food distribution. However, she highlighted access to arts and culture as the area most important to her. “Every Bostonian should feel that these great institutions are part of their heritage,” she said, referring to organizations such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Huntington Theatre, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

This year’s festival, which will feature more than 25 programs, is closely tied to Indigenous People’s Day celebrations. Activities will commence with a youth parade at noon, underlining the festival’s inclusive aim to welcome all Bostonians to participate in and shape cultural programming.

Brilliant also shared personal insights about travel, reflecting a deep appreciation for exploration paired with a penchant for returning to familiar places. She described Martha’s Vineyard as her “happy place for peace and fun,” where she enjoys spontaneous encounters and unique cultural moments. She recalled attending a sermon delivered by Senator Raphael Warnock at the Oak Bluffs Tabernacle and intimate house concerts by local musicians during a recent stay on the island.

Discussing her travel habits, Brilliant prefers planning trips herself, enjoying the research and organization involved, though she expressed openness to using a travel agent in the future. She noted challenges with completely unplugging from technology while on vacation but takes pride in reducing email checks during time away.

Among her travel memories, Brilliant cited a cherished childhood tradition of dining at the Clark Cooke House in Newport, Rhode Island, an experience recreated recently by her husband. She also recounted a difficult family cruise, which highlighted her preference for land-based travel where she can freely explore.

Looking ahead, Brilliant has booked a trip to Venice, Italy, describing the city as an essential destination due to its art, architecture, and culture, despite its environmental vulnerabilities. She recommended the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice as a must-visit location.

Brilliant’s travel philosophy emphasizes balance—planning a mix of cultural, social, and recreational activities while leaving room for spontaneous experiences, which often yield the most memorable moments. She encourages travelers to embrace fiction set in their destinations as a way to deepen their understanding and connection to a place.

Her reflections on travel conclude with the importance of slowing down and savoring moments that nourish the spirit, mind, and body, underscoring a thoughtful approach to exploration coupled with a commitment to cultural access and community engagement at home.
