Kemi Badenoch, a contender for the leadership of the Conservative Party, has outlined plans to introduce a £10 billion air defence system designed to protect the United Kingdom from missile and drone attacks if she becomes prime minister. The proposed “Britannia Shield” interceptor system would safeguard key infrastructure such as cities, ports, airports, and energy facilities.
Badenoch said the system’s funding would come from cuts to benefits she deems subject to abuse, along with measures aimed at cracking down on illegal working and restrictions on sponsorship for unaccompanied child migrants. She framed the initiative as a necessary investment to enhance national security, describing it as an “iron dome” to keep Britons safe.
Addressing immigration, Badenoch promised a stringent approach focused on reducing the number of migrants arriving in the UK, particularly those crossing the English Channel. She criticized the practice of sending food parcels to migrants in transit through France, stating the government should halt this assistance. Additionally, she emphasized plans to use existing powers to prevent sponsors from bringing unaccompanied children into the country and said resources should no longer be diverted to accommodating migrants in local communities with hotels being cited as an example.
On crime, Badenoch pledged to adopt a firmer stance, including increasing prison capacity and imposing a mandatory 10-year sentence for assaults on rail staff. She criticized what she described as a tendency to treat offenders as victims, asserting the need for a judicial system that better protects law-abiding citizens. Badenoch also took aim at the Labour Party, accusing it of focusing disproportionately on issues of inequality and race while neglecting public concerns about rising crime rates.
Badenoch characterized her approach as one rooted in pragmatism and patriotism, setting it apart from what she described as Labour’s “soft centre.” She said her leadership would prioritize the interests and safety of British taxpayers and law-abiding residents, with a commitment to preventing a recurrence of the challenges seen in 2022 related to border security and immigration management. Her manifesto signals a comprehensive strategy targeting national defence, immigration control, and law enforcement if she succeeds in becoming party leader next month.
