Kenan Bilalovic, the 21-year-old Swedish winger, has expressed optimism about his future at Aberdeen as the club prepares for the coming season. Having joined the Scottish Premiership side from IFK Varnamo last summer, Bilalovic initially found it challenging to adapt both on and off the pitch. Despite limited starts and primarily featuring as a substitute during his debut season, he managed to score three goals.
Returning for pre-season preparations, Bilalovic has shown encouraging signs of progress. He notably scored the solitary goal in a recent friendly victory against German side FC Bocholt, drawing praise from Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson. Bilalovic highlighted the importance of feeling comfortable in training as a factor in his growing confidence and form, noting that it takes time to regain peak performance but insists he is on the right track.
Adjusting to life in Scotland proved difficult at first, the winger acknowledged, but he has since settled in well. “It’s not so tough to be alone. I can handle myself. I have learned to cook so everything is OK,” he commented, also mentioning the support of teammates who have helped him acclimate.
Aberdeen’s current pre-season continues in the Netherlands, where the squad is preparing for a friendly against FC Twente. Bilalovic described the upcoming match as a significant test but said the team is entering it with confidence and determination, aiming to secure a win.
Manager Stephen Robinson has overseen a demanding training schedule focused on fitness and team cohesion, particularly as the club integrates eight new signings this summer. Bilalovic emphasized the positive atmosphere within the squad, reflecting on the group’s chemistry and the benefits of the rigorous pre-season program.
Robinson also provided an update on captain Kristers Tobers, who missed the Dutch training trip due to a minor setback in his recovery from a serious knee injury. The Latvian defender recently underwent a “minor clean-up procedure” but unfortunately developed an infection, delaying his return. Robinson acknowledged the mental and physical challenges Tobers has faced during his long rehabilitation and cautioned that it may take several months before the player returns to full fitness.
The manager expressed optimism about Tobers’ eventual comeback, noting the importance of regaining two key center-backs, Tobers and Mats Knoester, to bolster the squad’s defensive depth. Robinson projected a timeline of roughly three months before Tobers can contribute at his best but stressed the value of reintegrating him into the team environment as a critical step forward.
As Aberdeen concludes their pre-season campaign and looks ahead to the Premier Sports Cup opening fixture against Brora Rangers, the club appears focused on building momentum and team spirit with its blend of experienced players and new arrivals.
