Kenyan prosecutors have prepared murder charges against students accused of igniting a dormitory fire that resulted in the deaths of 16 girls at a secondary school in May. The fire occurred on May 28 at Utumishi Girls School, located in central Kenya, where 202 students were residing in the dormitory at the time.
According to authorities, the fire spread rapidly, forcing students to evacuate through a single doorway after the school matron reportedly failed to open an emergency exit. The incident led to a tragic loss of life and highlighted concerns over the school's safety protocols.
Police arrested nine suspects in connection with the fire. Investigations indicate that the blaze was deliberately started by setting a mattress on fire near an exit, according to law enforcement officials.
The decision to bring murder charges reflects the gravity of the incident and the authorities’ determination to hold those responsible accountable. Further legal proceedings are anticipated as the case advances through the judicial system.
