Kuwait Finance House (KFH) has become the first bank in Kuwait to receive the EDGE Advanced green building certification for its operating branches, marking a significant development in the institution’s sustainability efforts. The certification was awarded to KFH’s Kaifan and Shaab branches in a ceremony held at KFH Auto on October 31.
EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is an internationally recognized green building standard developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group. The certification process includes a rigorous assessment conducted by an accredited EDGE Expert and verified by an independent auditor, Bureau Veritas, which is appointed by IFC to oversee EDGE certifications. The evaluation covers building design, mechanical and electrical systems, renovations, upgrades, and operational practices to assess environmental performance.
Achieving EDGE Advanced certification indicates the buildings have attained at least 40% energy savings compared to a specified baseline under the EDGE methodology. The standard measures performance in three key areas: energy consumption, water efficiency, and embodied energy in building materials. It also considers a building’s capacity to support future transitions to carbon neutrality, reflecting KFH’s broader commitment to sustainable development.
KFH’s Executive Manager Governance and Sustainability, Mohammad Alarbeed, and Senior Manager Project, Yousef Alroumi, officially received the certification. Meshal Alshayee, Head of Group Compliance and Governance at KFH, said the milestone represents a tangible realization of the bank’s sustainability goals. He emphasized that the certification highlights KFH’s dedication to embedding measurable, data-driven environmental improvements into ongoing operations, not just new developments.
Alshayee further explained that sustainability is closely linked to operational excellence, governance, and a culture of compliance within the bank. The achievement serves as a practical framework to extend sustainable practices across KFH’s entire branch network, promoting resource efficiency while maintaining service quality. He noted that the initiative supports a portfolio-wide approach rather than isolated environmental actions, positioning KFH as a leader in responsible banking and sustainable business within Kuwait.
The adoption of the EDGE framework aligns with KFH’s long-term objective to implement consistent sustainability standards across its real estate holdings. The certification provides a methodology to benchmark environmental performance for facilities of varying ages, sizes, and functions.
By attaining this certification, KFH reinforces its role in fostering a more resource-efficient built environment in Kuwait, contributing to the broader goals of inclusive economic growth and environmental stewardship.
