Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense announced on Wednesday that the alert issued for Khamis Mushayt had been lifted following Houthi militia attacks on the southwestern city and three neighboring areas the previous day. The clashes resulted in injuries to dozens of people.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense confirmed that the immediate threat to Khamis Mushayt governorate had subsided, and urged residents to continue observing safety guidelines, avoid gatherings and refrain from photography. Emergency assistance remained available through the designated hotline.
On Tuesday, the Houthi group claimed responsibility for an attack targeting an airbase in the region, located in southern Saudi Arabia. The Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia, condemned the escalation. Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki characterized the Houthi actions as “dangerous” and reflective of a hostile and irresponsible strategy aimed at Saudi territory and critical infrastructure.
The United Nations also issued a statement condemning the cross-border assaults, highlighting their impact on civilian populations and energy facilities. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric expressed serious concern over the reported civilian injuries resulting from the attacks.
Echoing this response, the European Union called on the Houthis to cease all offensive operations against Saudi Arabia. Similarly, Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassem Albudaiwi denounced the targeting of southern Saudi cities by the militia.
International support for Saudi Arabia was evident in statements from several countries. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Saudi sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, extending prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. Meanwhile, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure as a dangerous escalation and a serious violation of international law, pledging full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.
The attacks mark a continuation of the conflict spilling over from Yemen into Saudi territory, underscoring ongoing regional tensions involving the Houthi movement. Saudi authorities remain vigilant as efforts to safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure continue amid the volatile security situation.
