Kia has introduced the EV2, a compact electric vehicle positioned to compete with models such as the Renault 4 and electric versions of the Ford Puma. The new EV2 joins Kia’s expanding range of electric vehicles, which currently includes the rakish EV6, the large EV9 SUV, and the smaller EV5 SUV, alongside the medium-sized EV3 and EV4 hatchbacks.
The EV2 First Edition is the initial variant to reach the United Kingdom, featuring a 42.2 kWh battery and an official range of approximately 190 miles on a single charge. Notably, this battery capacity is smaller than what Kia offers in subsequent trim levels, which come equipped with a 61 kWh battery and a claimed range of 275 miles. Despite having a lower range, the First Edition is not the most affordable option in the lineup. This disparity is underscored by differing government incentives: the First Edition qualifies for a reduced subsidy of £1,500, whereas models with the larger battery receive the full £3,750 grant.
The First Edition is comprehensively equipped, offering features that are uncommon in vehicles of its size. These include an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, aiming to enhance the in-car experience for drivers and passengers alike.
In terms of styling, the Kia EV2 departs from the traditional compact electric car appearance. The body is characterized by a robust, boxy silhouette with a prominent front end featuring Kia’s distinctive headlights, which some observers have described as having a somewhat unusual, melting-like appearance. The vehicle’s midsection adopts a rugged, faux four-wheel-drive aesthetic. At the rear, the design further deviates from convention with tail-lights positioned low and wide towards the edges of the vehicle, contrary to the more common placement higher up on the bodywork.
Kia’s rollout of the EV2 continues the brand’s effort to cater to diverse electric vehicle segments, though the details surrounding battery size and range across different trims may present confusion to prospective buyers. The company’s approach suggests a focus on offering a variety of options to meet different customer needs within the small electric SUV market.
