Kia has introduced the EV4 GT, an electric family car combining practicality with sporty performance. The model delivers 284 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds, making it quicker than most vehicles in its segment while maintaining a starting price of £49,345. It features an 81 kWh battery offering a driving range of up to 313 miles, producing zero emissions.
The EV4 GT shares some design and technological elements with the more powerful EV6 GT, which boasts 640 horsepower; however, the EV4 GT is aimed at customers seeking a balance between performance and everyday usability. Both vehicles feature all-wheel drive, though the EV4 GT has a front-wheel bias. Among the technologies included are dynamic torque vectoring and an artificial six-speed gearbox, known as Virtual Gearshift Technology (VGS), which simulates gear changes and engine sounds typically absent in single-speed electric drivetrains.
The VGS system enhances the driving experience by adding a sense of depth often missing from EVs, with flappy paddles on the steering wheel allowing manual adjustments. However, users cannot use the VGS and braking regeneration functions simultaneously, which some drivers may find restrictive. Braking regeneration is employed to slow the car before corners, mimicking downshifting in traditional vehicles. Additionally, launch control on the EV4 GT is limited to one activation every two minutes.
Beyond its performance credentials, the EV4 GT offers a refined and quiet interior designed for comfort and convenience. The cabin features ample storage pockets, multiple power outlets, and large cup holders, accommodating the needs of families. The driver’s display is noted for presenting key information like speed and range clearly and intuitively. The central touchscreen supports entertainment options such as YouTube, Netflix, and games, aiding occupants during charging stops.
The EV4 GT’s top speed is capped at 105 mph, reinforcing its role as a practical family electric vehicle rather than an outright sports car. It is already available in the UK market.
Elsewhere in the electric vehicle market, BYD announced that its upcoming seven-seat Atto 8 will be capable of recharging from near empty to full in just nine minutes, delivering a range of approximately 400 miles. This model is expected to arrive in the UK in January.
Separately, the Smart car brand plans to reintroduce its original two-seat model as a compact electric vehicle with a 180-mile range, priced under £20,000.
Volkswagen is also making shifts in its naming conventions, moving away from numeric designations such as ID4 and ID5 to names once again. The new ID Tiguan will offer options of two-wheel and four-wheel drive, with a maximum range of 370 miles. Its interior will feature digital instruments derived from the latest Golf models, including a passenger screen.
