The arrests were made during Ops Pedo 3.0, a coordinated enforcement effort carried out from September 14 to 16 by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk M Kumar disclosed that the operation focused on 92 identified suspects based on intelligence analyzed by the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children unit.

The youngest detained was a 13-year-old girl, and the age range of those apprehended spanned from 13 to 56 years old. Among the 53 detainees, 51 were men and two were women. The group included eight teenagers, as well as 45 adults, which comprised a teacher and a laboratory assistant. Comm Kumar noted that two suspects, aged 24 and 44, were public servants employed by educational institutions; however, these individuals were unrelated and unaffiliated with the same school.

Investigations revealed that several suspects not only downloaded CSAM but also engaged in producing anime-style explicit animations. The illicit digital materials were reportedly sold online for prices between RM50 and RM60, commonly using payment methods such as e-wallets and PayPal. Authorities expressed concern over this development, highlighting that the active involvement in content creation marked a shift from passive consumption to production and commercial distribution by minors.

During the operation, law enforcement seized a total of 95 items, including 90 digital devices such as mobile phones, computers, laptops, tablets, storage devices, routers, and modems, along with five sex toys. Preliminary forensic analysis uncovered 653,193 digital files across these devices, consisting of 540,127 files classified as CSAM and 113,066 files of adult pornography.

Following the raid, 52 investigation papers were opened. As of September 21, 23 cases have proceeded to court, while 29 remain under active investigation. According to Comm Kumar, this enforcement action contributes to a larger ongoing effort to combat online exploitation, noting that since 2024, Ops Pedo combined with Operation Cyber Guardian has resulted in 170 arrests, the seizure of 369 items, and the uncovering of over 2.1 million CSAM and pornography files.

The operations have demonstrated a rising trend in arrests: 13 suspects were apprehended during Ops Pedo 1.0 in 2024, 31 in the following year, and 53 in the latest phase. Cumulatively, the three iterations of Ops Pedo have led to 97 arrests, 94 investigation papers, 214 seized items, and the exposure of more than 1.5 million CSAM and adult pornography files.

Comm Kumar called upon parents to increase vigilance over their children's online activities, including the monitoring of social media usage, emphasizing that enforcement efforts alone are insufficient to address the issue effectively.
