North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over a series of weapons tests, including the launch of a strategic cruise missile, aboard the country’s newly repaired 5,000-tonne naval destroyer, the Kang Kon, according to state media reports. The tests were conducted on Friday and showcased a range of advanced military capabilities, reflecting Pyongyang’s efforts to strengthen its naval forces with nuclear-capable weapons.

The tests encompassed the firing of a nuclear-capable cruise missile, as well as evaluations of the destroyer’s anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air-defense systems. Additionally, the main gun and automatic cannons of the Kang Kon were fired, alongside trials of its electronic warfare systems. The assessments also focused on the ship’s target-detection and information-processing functions, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the trials.

The Kang Kon, which had previously been damaged during a failed launch event last year, has since undergone repairs and modifications. Kim observed the weapons demonstrations both from the destroyer itself and from the shore before directing officials to finalize the vessel’s trials and commission it into active service within two months.

These developments align with Kim Jong Un’s stated objective to develop a nuclear-capable navy, a goal that highlights North Korea’s expanding military ambitions amid ongoing regional tensions. The introduction of such advanced weaponry into its naval arsenal signals a significant step in Pyongyang’s pursuit of enhanced maritime strategic capabilities.
