Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former U.S. ambassador to Greece, was effectively dismissed from her post following revelations about her conduct and financial dealings, culminating in the White House press secretary’s announcement that President Donald Trump requested her resignation. Guilfoyle’s tenure, which began less than a year ago, ended amid reports alleging inappropriate requests for financial favors from a Republican donor and questions about her professional judgment.
Guilfoyle, 57, was nominated as ambassador shortly after ending her engagement to Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son. The couple had been publicly affectionate, sharing a $9.7 million Florida home and appearing together at Trump rallies. However, Trump Jr. later married a Florida socialite and model, Bettina Anderson, shortly before Guilfoyle’s ambassadorial appointment.
Her selection for the diplomatic post raised eyebrows both in Washington and Athens. Observers suggested the timing of her nomination coincided with the transition in Trump Jr.’s personal life, prompting speculation that the administration sought to move her abroad during a sensitive period. Despite this, some Greek officials acknowledged her active involvement in advancing longstanding U.S.-Greece initiatives, including plans for a U.S.-backed port near Athens and natural gas exploration near Corfu.
During her time in Greece, Guilfoyle generated significant media attention due to her high-profile social activities. She arrived on the private jet of a wealthy Greek-American businessman, attended late-night events, and displayed a flamboyant public persona that drew both fascination and criticism. Yet, Greek political figures such as Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis noted her dedication to the role, suggesting that results mattered more than her personal style.
Guilfoyle’s fall from grace began after a series of investigative reports. The Washington Post reported that she sought a $100,000 payment to settle her American Express credit card balance from Eric Deters, a Republican donor, just before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. Text messages provided by Deters appeared to show Guilfoyle pressing for assistance, which raised ethical questions about her conduct.
Additional scrutiny emerged regarding potential conflicts of interest related to energy deals in the Balkans that she had promoted shortly after assuming her post. These allegations led to mounting pressure that ultimately compelled her resignation.
Before her ambassadorship, Guilfoyle had a varied career as a Fox News host and legal analyst. She had previously been married to Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, positioning her as part of a politically prominent network. However, her departure from Fox News in 2018 followed internal investigations and allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior, including sexual harassment claims, which she denied.
In her brief tenure as ambassador, Guilfoyle was the first woman to hold the post since its establishment in 1948, a fact she underscored with visible pride during an interview last year. Yet, her diplomatic career concluded amid controversy, highlighting the challenges faced by political appointees whose personal and professional lives intersect closely with prominent figures. As of now, her future plans remain unclear.
