King Louis XIV of France holds the record for the longest uninterrupted reign of any European monarch. Born in 1638 to King Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, he ascended to the throne at just under five years old following his father’s death. Initially, his mother served as regent until Louis assumed full control of the government in 1661 at age 22, after the passing of his chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin.

In 1660, Louis XIV married Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, with whom he had six legitimate children. Despite this, his private life was significantly influenced by three prominent mistresses: Madame de Maintenon, Madame de Montespan, and Louise de La Valliere. It is believed that he entered into a secret marriage with Madame de Maintenon after Maria Theresa’s death in 1683.

During his extensive reign, Louis XIV transformed France into the dominant power in Europe. He expanded French territory through numerous military campaigns and undertook significant cultural and architectural projects. Most notably, he revamped the Palace of Versailles, evolving it from a modest hunting lodge into a grand royal residence that became the seat of his government. His reign is often recognized for major achievements in art, literature, and architecture, earning him the moniker "the Sun King."

Later in life, Louis XIV experienced personal losses that affected the line of succession. His only surviving son, known as le Grand Dauphin, and his grandson, Louis, Duke of Burgundy (le Petit Dauphin), both died before him. Consequently, the throne passed to his great-grandson, who became Louis XV at the age of five.

Louis XIV died in 1715 at the age of 76 after a reign lasting 72 years and 110 days, making his tenure the longest of any monarch in recorded history, both in Europe and worldwide. His reign remains notable for its length and profound impact on French and European history. By comparison, the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom held the second-longest reign globally and the longest in British history, having ruled for 70 years and 214 days.
