King Charles III has issued a warning about the growing and evolving cyber threats facing the United Kingdom in a message commemorating the 10th anniversary of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). In his statement, the King emphasized the importance of robust cybersecurity measures as essential to maintaining safety and resilience in the digital environment amid ongoing challenges posed by hostile online activities.
The King highlighted how disinformation and other malicious behaviors continue to threaten trust and security in the digital age, noting that adversaries are increasingly employing automated technologies to adapt their tactics. He praised the NCSC, a branch of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), for its role in protecting the country from cyber attacks, safeguarding democratic institutions, and securing critical infrastructure essential to daily life.
Established in 2016 and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in February 2017, the NCSC was created to position the UK as a global leader in cyber safety for both living and working online. Reflecting on the agency’s decade of service, the King noted its success in strengthening resilience across public services, businesses, and communities, enabling stakeholders to thrive in an ever-changing digital landscape. He acknowledged the significant risks posed to the nation’s economic stability and core values by cyber threats, underscoring the vital role of the NCSC’s work in supporting public confidence in digital technologies while protecting the country’s democracy, economy, and infrastructure.
The King’s comments come shortly after he convened major technology leaders at Dumfries House in Ayrshire to address concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). He warned of the “existential dangers” posed by emerging AI technologies, cautioning that they could develop harmful capabilities, including the potential to “perhaps even take life.” During this meeting, he urged companies to consider carefully the risks of such technologies falling into the wrong hands and being used in destructive ways, stressing the need for sufficient regulatory controls before irreversible damage occurs.
By linking the evolving cyber threats with the rapidly advancing AI landscape, the King underscored the urgency of coordinated efforts to mitigate risks associated with digital innovation and to ensure that emerging technologies are developed and deployed responsibly.
