Igor Chernyshov scored twice, including the decisive goal in overtime, to lead the San José Sharks to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night. Chernyshov’s winning goal came with 1:42 remaining in the extra period when he converted a one-timer off a pass from Macklin Celebrini, who recorded five assists in the Sharks’ first two games of the season.

San José improved to 2-0 with their second consecutive overtime win to start the campaign, a notable turnaround after not securing a victory in the first five games of the season for the past four years. Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves for the Sharks, who also received goals from Tyler Toffoli, Kiefer Sherwood, and Nolan Allan.

The Kings rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime but ultimately fell short. Adrian Kempe, Quinton Byfield, Erik Haula, and Artemi Panarin provided the scoring for Los Angeles, with goaltender Anton Forsberg stopping 20 shots.

Los Angeles struck first with Kempe scoring on a power-play one-timer assisted by Panarin in the opening period. The Sharks responded with three goals in the second, beginning with Toffoli converting a power-play opportunity set up by rookie Ivar Stenberg. The Kings narrowed the gap late in the second when Byfield scored on a power play with just over a second remaining in the period.

Early in the third, Chernyshov extended San José’s lead to 4-2 with a breakaway goal. The Kings then mounted a comeback, with Haula cutting the lead to one before Panarin capitalized on a defensive miscue by Nolan Allan to tie the game at 4-4 with just over five minutes remaining.

The overtime period saw strong possession from the Kings, but the Sharks ultimately secured the win on Chernyshov’s finish. The result highlights San José’s strong start to the season after a challenging stretch in recent years, while Los Angeles demonstrated resilience despite the loss.
