SAN JOSÉ — The San José Sharks secured a 5-4 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night, marking their second consecutive overtime win to start the NHL season. Igor Chernyshov scored the game-winning goal with 1:42 remaining in overtime, giving the Sharks an early advantage in the young campaign while the Kings remained winless at 0-1-1.
The Kings began the scoring with Adrian Kempe netting a power-play goal in the first period, assisted by Artemi Panarin. San José responded strongly in the second period, scoring three times. Tyler Toffoli opened the floodgates with a power-play goal assisted by rookie Ivar Stenberg, followed by Tyler Toffoli, Kiefer Sherwood, and Nolan Allan each finding the net to give the Sharks a 4-2 lead early in the third period.
San José’s Chernyshov extended the lead with a breakaway goal early in the third, his second of the night. However, the Kings fought back late in the period, cutting the deficit. Erik Haula scored to bring the Kings within one, and Panarin tied the game at 4-4 with 5:01 left after a turnover by Sharks defenseman Nolan Allan led to a scoring opportunity.
In the overtime period, the Kings controlled much of the play and appeared to have momentum. Nevertheless, Chernyshov capitalized on a one-timer in front of the net off a pass from Macklin Celebrini, who is off to an impressive start with five assists in two games. This goal clinched the victory for San José.
Goaltending was strong on both sides, with Sharks netminder Yaroslav Askarov making 31 saves and Kings goalie Anton Forsberg stopping 20 shots. Despite the comeback effort, Forsberg was unable to stop the decisive shot late in extra time.
The Kings showed resilience coming from behind in the third but were unable to convert their chances in overtime. Meanwhile, the Sharks demonstrated depth in scoring and opportunistic play to improve their record to 2-0.
