Dr. Sarah Al-Ateeqi, a researcher at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), is serving as a scientific researcher and natural heritage expert on Kuwait’s delegation to the 48th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee. The session is taking place in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29.

The Kuwaiti delegation is led by Ambassador Dr. Ali Fahad Al-Mudhaf, Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, and includes Dr. Muhammad Khalid Al-Jassar, Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL), alongside other specialists in cultural and natural heritage.

During the committee meetings, Dr. Al-Ateeqi is contributing to the evaluation of natural heritage sites nominated for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. She is also involved in assessing the conservation status of sites already inscribed on the list and engaging in discussions related to their protection and the preservation of their outstanding universal value.

In addition, she participates in deliberations on policies and programs designed to enhance international cooperation in natural heritage conservation. Kuwait’s involvement in the World Heritage Committee follows the country’s election in November 2025 to represent the Arab Group for a four-year term among the committee’s 21 members. The elections were held at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris.
