Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has faced criticism from former Germany internationals following comments he made about the national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann during a recent television broadcast. Speaking ahead of Germany’s 7-1 victory over Curaçao, Klopp expressed doubts about Nagelsmann's team selection, remarking, “Luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team – for now.”
The comments drew swift rebuke from prominent former players. Lothar Matthäus, who holds the record for most appearances with 150 caps for Germany, responded by saying Klopp should have been more considerate, noting that such remarks are unlikely to ease Nagelsmann's position. Stefan Effenberg, capped 35 times by the national side, described Klopp’s statement as “unacceptable,” adding that such criticism may be appropriate among friends but is inappropriate when broadcast to a wide audience.
Klopp subsequently issued an apology, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his remarks. “I could have slapped myself across the face for saying that,” he admitted, indicating regret for his public comments.
The incident highlights tensions surrounding Nagelsmann's role and selection decisions, with the national team currently navigating a period of rebuilding and scrutiny ahead of upcoming competitions. Klopp’s critique, delivered in the capacity of a pundit, sparked debate over the boundaries of public commentary on coaching decisions within German football circles.
